Avignon

The famous Avignon bridge is actually called
Saint Benezet Bridge.
It was first constructed in the 17th century, originally had 22 arches
 and measured 900 metres long.
The river it partially crosses is the Rhône.

One of the squares.
Almost everywhere you go, you can see a church steeple
or religious statues.

There are many cobbled streets and you need comfortable
walking shoes to get around!
The cobblestones seem to be washed every morning
and this close-up shows how these well-worn stones tell a story
of many many years right back to the Middle Ages.

There is plenty of beautiful stonework and  this door really caught my eye.

There are windows with stone carvings and decorated window panes.

and others with gorgeous reflections and decorated with flowers.

How about this lovely attic window
with the curtain mysteriously almost closed in the afternoon?

There are many many restaurants
and my favourites are the simplest ones
which serve a simple 'plat du jour' (daily special).
This place only had room for one table for two outside.
Don't you love it?
Shall we meet and have lunch there?

Three little olive trees all in a row
and some Savon de Marseille in the window,
the famous soap.

I have so many photographs after visiting this lovely town three times,
but I'll stop for today with this early evening shot of a rosy sky.

YES! Let's do lunch at that sweet restaurant with the pretty serviettes on the table!

Your photo's are terrific. Just what I needed to see on this grey day when the sky is leaking!

  4. Gorgeous photos. I do so love France and you've captured it so beautifully. Especially love the window shots and those lovely little olive trees. I wonder if they would survive the cold if I try and replicate that here?! Thank you for taking us with you on your trip. Happy weekend. :)

  6. Wow, really beautiful! I love that first picture! Beautiful colors. That door is just amazing! I may just have to pin this to my door board on Pinterest :) I could definitely see more of your pictures from this place... The different pops of colors in the photos make the photos as a group really nice!

  7. Thanks for taking us on this little tour -- what a charming city! I love the old window with the beautiful reflection in it. Your bridge image is gorgeous -- isn't there a old children's song about it? You know I'm crazy about old doors -- they have stories to tell. And, yes, I want to eat lunch at the little table -- so inviting!

  12. You make me long to be there! Gorgeous images Sandra.

The bridge here was cobbled, still is under the tarmacadam, film crews used to film period dramas on it, but then the council decided they wouldn't fund specialist repair. I still miss those cobbles.

I would love to walk out on that bridge with a camera, and you have captured those wonderful cobblestone streets so beautifully.
I am having a difficult time choosing a favorite here, but I think it is the seventh one. I love window shots, and this one is wonderful.

  17. I'm late to lunch as usual but glad I made it to your 'plat du jour' of photographs. So many textures here, it makes me want to reach out and touch them. You've captured the spirit of Avignon. Such beautiful light in Provence too, it's easy to see why photographers and artists love it so.
