Yellow and Blue

I think we all now know what the colours yellow and blue represent.
They make us think of sunshine and blue skies
but right now, they remind us of the Ukrainian flag
and what the Ukrainian people are going through.

Whatever we are doing in our own daily lives,
our thoughts turn, irrevocably and with empathy, to all the suffering experienced
by innocent people as they are forced to flee their beloved country.

This is the yellow and blue mandala I made.

I have not posted for a while as I have been very busy doing important crochet projects
for gifts, and they have been taking up a great deal of my time.
When they are completely finished, I will post them on my blog.

I love going down to the big market on Saturdays
to buy fresh fruit and vegetables and farm eggs.

There are often musicians playing and this young musician was playing his
cello very beautifully to earn some money for his musical studies.
I gave him something, of course!

As I passed one street, I looked up to see the elegant tower of Lausanne Cathedral
which looked so lovely against the blue sky.

I've received an early birthday gift of a book on photography
on the work and life of Vivian Maier.
She has become famous for her clever street photography and self-portraits.
Since I am still doing my self-portrait class. I was inspired to try out a similar style.

This shot was taken in a richly decorated shop window where there were also mirrors.
The reflections have given a double self-portrait!

One of the exercises given was to take a picture of our hands,
so I held up a glass ball to try and capture my garland of hearts!
I finally got the ball centred after several tries!

I did receive some beautiful red roses and decided to make a collage of different details
of the lovely petals.

My pink Amaryllis grew a second stem with stunning and photogenic blooms

The back views are beautiful too.

A few petal details in this collage.

There have been visits down to the lake in Ouchy
and our weather has been so beautifully sunny - even if the March winds
have made it feel colder.

Both these photos are taken from Ouchy looking over to the French side and mountains
and the town of Evian.

One day, I took the train to the lakeside town of Vevey. It's not far at all from where I live.
I did love the sparkles on the water.
It was a little tricky to take the photo as I was almost facing the sun.

This is from the same town, but with a closer view on the majestic Dents du Midi.
They are a three-kilometre long mountain range in the Chablais Alps
in the canton of Valais in Switzerland.

Closer to home, and in my neighbourhood, I saw these charming snowdrops.

On one of my daily walks, I noticed this tiny Harlequin Ladybird nestled
in the leaves of a flowering Viburnum bush.

Some of the south-facing Magnolia trees have started to bloom.
This particular one had such beautiful petals.

A yellow and blue collage for Ukraine.
The pansies are on my balcony
and I crocheted the yellow hearts set in a blue granny square.

It was also time to put a spring wreath on my front door.
I chose pastel colours and a flower pattern
where you will see many beautiful flowery patterns.

I hope that spring is waking up where you live and that the sunshine
and blue skies are uplifting your thoughts during these troubled times.

We can help those in need by donating to the charities that are suggested in the media.
I like to use La Chaîne du Bonheur
which is a well-known and trusted Swiss organization
and also Doctors Without Borders.

Christmas Eve

Little cyclamen on my balcony under the snow!

A walk in the higher part of my neighbourhood to enjoy the delicate colours
in the sky with a hint of pink in the mist.
You can just see the lake below.

Some pale green leaves still hanging on with a little drop of ice on their tips.

Orange and pink spindle berries brightening up the leafless trees.

Now we go downtown to see the barrel organist playing cheerful music
and singing along!

I met a friend here to do some shopping.
As I was waiting, I saw this lady set up her stall with wreaths
and candle arrangements and mistletoe hanging on her striped parasol.

I went to the craft market here full of beautiful handmade objects.
I really liked the coloured crocheted blankets on the chairs outside.

A florist was selling seasonal plants displayed in the street.

I went to the hairdresser's and he greeted me in this amusing
Christmas outfit! Look at his sweet little dog called Jack
who is looking at us with a surprised expression! I liked his Christmas kerchief!

The church, called St. Laurent, with part of some Christmas lights zigzagging across.

I crossed one of the big bridges in the town and took a photo of Lausanne Cathedral
through the spokes of a big wheel put up over the Christmas period.

You can see the words 'Bô Noël'
Bô being the phonetic form of 'beau' meaning beautiful
Noël is Christmas!

Back home again and my velvety red Amaryllis plant has eight blooms
flowering at the same time!
There is one more stalk still growing and that will certainly give me another four flowers.
I can already see the red buds bursting out of their layer of green.
Such beautiful plants.

Little Miss Mistletoe
hanging against one of my snowflakes.

My tiny Christmas tree with fairy lights and smiling angels.

I have been crocheting tiny red bells with a silver edging.
They're so gratifying to make!

I had all my Christmas cards sent off by December 16th - and it would seem
that they have all arrived safely.
I love the pretty Christmas stamps.
I put a sparkling snowflake into certain envelopes for a little surprise!

I baked some traditional Viennese Crescent Christmas cookies.
They seem to be everyone's favourite.
Here is half a batch cooling and some of them will go into the little robin tin.

In this Christmas season where many people spend lots of money on buying gifts
and luxurious foodstuffs, there are many who cannot do this.

I had the idea of making little cellophane packets containing some pre-wrapped chocolate
and a crocheted snowflake or star.
I made eleven of them with a little message inside saying:
'Celui qui trouve ce paquet,
C'est pour toi!
Joyeux Noël!'

This simply says:
The person who finds this packet.
It's for you!
Happy Christmas!

I went out into my neighbourhood discreetly placing the little packets in
easy to find places!
I really had fun doing this.
Some I placed near potted plants in local shops, in the post office,
pharmacy, even one yellow star next to yellow packets of coffee!
I think I giggled a little as I went around until my bag was empty!
I really hope that people will pick up these little gifts and that they will give them a smile!

To finish this pre-Christmas blog post, I give you lots of happy baubles
which I photographed in the shops when I went downtown.
I hope you like my festive antlers and big green bow!

I wish you all a very Happy Christmas!

Day 18 - Time to Dream

Isn't that what summer is all about?
Taking time to dream
and be totally immersed in the moment.

New flowers to plant in two of my window-boxes
I bought them down the market today
and just love their fresh colours.

What to Do on a Rainy Day

There are so many things I love to do on a rainy day!
Crochet is one of them - and I recently finished my spring wreath for the front door.
It makes me feel welcome when I come home

I love to capture nature abstracts
like in the harmonious curves of the petals of my Amaryllis.
Photography is something we can definitely do on a rainy day, even inside!

Bringing home a basket of three daffodil bulbs was like bringing spring sunshine
into my home.

No need to resist capturing them from every angle!

Just drink in their yellow beauty until the sunshine and blue skies return.

Sit down with a big cup of  a delicious warm drink.
This one is a ginger and lemon infusion.

Why not practice some fun self-portraits.
My favourites this week are double exposures!

Oh yes, and another thing to do on a rainy day!
Make a new blog entry!

Instead of  wanting to make everything incredibly perfect,
just do things the way they are today
and that is enough!

Blogger's Block

It is a known fact that writers sometimes suffer from writer's block.
So it seems only natural that those of us who have blogs can experience a similar feeling.

After writing a recent entry entitled "Why Blog?".
It did seem that I had lost my own enthusiasm - even though I know that I write here
for myself above all, but also for any others who care to come this way.

With the convenience and rapidity of computers, the art of letter-writing
has become a thing of the past.
It seemed to happen overnight if I judge by the stashes of beautiful writing paper
I still have in my cupboard.

Last year, I took out that pretty stationery and started writing letters again.
They don't need to be long, but they do need to be thoughtful and caring.
I can imagine how nice it must feel to receive a pretty envelope containing a few personal words
in the post-box among the usual bills.

I certainly haven't experienced any blockages in taking photographs
and have been enjoying taking still-life images,
like this tiny exotic perfume bottle, offered to me by my son many years ago.
A souvenir from Sharm El-Sheikh on the edge of the Red Sea in Egypt.

I've been playing with depth of field and colour and enjoying the effects.

Black and white photography can be really interesting
and is especially suited to abstracts

or capturing light and shadows in my home in the morning sun.

During the whole of February, I've been taking daily self-portraits
as part of a gathering of other ladies.
This is a challenge as the years go by, but it's all part of our acceptance journey
of embracing the changes that inevitably take place.

So without waiting any longer to be inspired to make the best blog entry ever,
perhaps the everyday happenings are enough
and I'm just being hard on myself or too much of a perfectionist!

We've been going through a Siberian-like cold snap through this latter part of February,
but after a few snowfalls tomorrow, things will start warming up again.

March is definitely coming in like a lion!
So I think we deserve some beautiful tulips - to remind us that spring is on its way!
