Bringing Colour into Winter

Do you know the Flower Fairy books
by Cicely Mary Barker?
I opened the page on the Primrose Fairy.
Isn't she lovely?
There's a poem to match each fairy too!

I really appreciate the fact that we can find beautiful potted flowers
during these winter months.
I picked three of my primroses to put on the Primrose Fairy page!

Of course, we're getting light snowfalls here in town and it looks so pretty
when it settles on the trees and bushes and in the gardens.
I just love this garden gate. Don't you?

The red berries got a good covering of fluffy snow.

and the evergreens in the nearby park looked beautiful.

It's the perfect weather for Cheese Raclette!
It's a combination of small potatoes in their jackets
and a special kind of raclette cheese which is tasty and melts easily.
I used two types of cheese:
Bagnes and Alpages.
A nice crunchy carrot salad on the side and a turn of the pepper mill on the cheese.

You can read more about raclette when I did an evening cruise on the lake:

More colour to bring into the home in the form of a beautiful bouquet of tulips.
They are still in bud and will bring me great joy as they open up.
I chose this photo for my new blog header. The frame is bright and cheerful
to bring you some happy colour in these winter months!

There's always something on my crochet hook.

I'm going to make a garland with these hearts and I'll be posting the finished decoration
in a future blog post.

This lovely pattern comes is called Sunburst Granny Hearts and comes from

    1. So nice to have you visit! I just love that garden gate too, especially as my neighbourhood has a mixture of taller apartment buildings and some private houses!

    1. Thanks so much, Connie! The snow comes and goes. It is quickly cleared in the town and salt is put down on the roads and paths. It's snowing now in fact! I do love that gate and how the top of the posts collected little mounds of fresh snow!

  3. Such pretty, fluffy snow photos, Sandra! I love that light kind of snow so much. We really haven't had much in our area this winter--only about 4 inches are on the ground.

I so enjoy your colorful photos during winter--I need to buy some fresh flowers soon. They are always so cheery. And your hearts will make a wonderful garland for Valentine's Day! I look forward to seeing yours all finished up.

Wishing you a lovely February, Sandra! ♥

    1. Yes, the light and fluffy snow is the prettiest, I agree! In my area, we've had about the same amount as you and then it melts again before the next snowfalls come.
Colour is so good for us in the winter, isn't it! Thank you for your good wishes for February!

  4. Hard to believe January is gone already! Snow has caught up with us too and even though it's pretty (unless you have to clear the yard three times a day), it makes me long for colours even more. Seeing your pictures, I think I'll buy some flowers too, when I do the groceries... Have a lovely day, Marjan

    1. Yes, February is already here! Our snow doesn't seem to stay for long as it warms up in-between snowfalls! Colour is so important at this time of the year and that is why I love to fill my home with plants or flowers. We can also create lots of colour with our crochet projects! Thank you, Marjan!

  5. Love the garden gate photo. What joy to have primroses inside to gaze at, as well as your simply gorgeous crochet hearts (can't wait to see the garland in all its glory).

The raclette and salad looks diving . . . I'll be round later to sit opposite you, seeing as you've been kind enough to lay a place for me! LOL!

We had about an inch of snow last night, but it's melting fast. I'm sitting here enjoying your blog post with a warming cup of delicious decaf filter coffee. Mmmmmm.

    Hugs, Sarn xxx

    1. Always such a joy to have you visit here, Sarn! That garden gate is gorgeous, isn't it? There's something homely and welcoming about a garden gate! Oh yes, pop round for raclette anytime! Just let me know in advance so that I can get the special cheese! Thank goodness for lovely pots of spring flowers and colourful cotton to crochet. It makes winter so much lovelier! It's snowing as I write these words. So pretty!

  6. Thank you for bringing color into my day! The fairy is quite lovely with your own flowers next to her. I am also glad that we have plants and bouquets to have inside when there is snow outside. Although a little snow is always beautiful, especially on the red berries. We got a few inches of snow here over night. Your post has me realizing I need to go out and get some flowers to brighten my house. :)

  12. The new header is lovely and very cheerful indeed with the pink frame. And the primroses are beautiful.

Cheese Raclette sounds delicious. I love cheese, and potatoes, and together they make a wonderful meal. One of my favourite dishes is roasted cubed potatoes topped with melted cheese and a sprinkle of chopped fresh parsley.

Wonderful snow photos, and yes, that garden gate is delightful! As are the pretty crochet hearts. :)

    1. How lovely to have you visit, Sue! The snow is being pretty shy so far this year, so I have to go out when it's all happening! The roads and paths are cleared quickly here in town, which is safer both for cars and pedestrians, but in the countryside the views are so pretty! Yes, potatoes and cheese go so well together, don't they!

  14. Hi, Sandra. As with so many others here, the garden gate is my favorite photo. Gates are so inviting. I want to walk through into the magic that awaits on the other side. We're having a by-turns snowy and rainy winter here in Ohio. I need to buy myself some flowers tomorrow when I go to the store. I should do that more often. I love Cicely Mary Barker. I have several of her flower fairy books and love looking through her beautiful work.
