A Wedding in Zermatt, 2018

There was a special event in August this year:
My son's wedding in Zermatt.

Most of the guests went up to the mountains for three days.
I did the train journey with my daughter and grandson.

I'll start off by showing you the Zermatt flag which is very striking .

Then there is the Canton of Valais flag

and the well-known Swiss flag

We had booked into the same hotel.
It's just a stone's throw away from the church
where the wedding was to take place.

As you can see, it's very mountainous.
The town itself is at an altitude of 1.620 metres
(5.310 ft)

Twice a day, a herd of goats were lead through the main street

The children guiding the goats were dressed in embroidered
red tunics.

The surrounding mountains are stunning

But the most iconic of all is the Matterhorn
whose summit is 4,478 metres (14,692 ft)

On the first day, we settled into our hotel and enjoyed visiting the little town.

On the second day, a wonderful outing was organized for all the wedding guests.
We took a cogwheel train up higher into the mountains
where a delicious meal was served on an outside terrace.
It was lovely to meet up with other members of the family
and meet friends and colleagues who had been invited.

We walked back down all the way down to the village.
It took about one and a half hours and I could really feel the muscles
on my legs for a few days afterwards!

The day of the wedding arrived and we left our hotel dressed in our wedding outfits!
My daughter took this photo of me as we were leaving!

My daughter and grandson, in disguise!

After the church service
We all went to the wedding reception where drinks and snacks were served outside.
We had a quick peek and the prepared tables in the living room,
This long one was for my son and his wife and all close members of the family.

There were also two round tables.

I had been busy many weeks previously crocheting red hearts
for each guest.
I was so happy to participate this way.
I had also seen the idea of folding the starched napkin into an envelope shape
with a place to hold the menu
and with the heart,
I like that the envelope represents a love letter.

The flowers are not yet on the tables.
They were pretty red roses and white baby's breath and greenery.
Perfect!

One of the sparkling chandeliers in the dining-room.

Here are the happy couple leaving in the hotel's carriage drawn by
two white horses.
So romantic!
It was a fairy-tale wedding!

You can see the good-luck rice being thrown as the carriage leaves!

There were many emotional moments, especially at the church.
It was very much an unforgettable and wonderful time in the mountains!

Last December,
I also visited Zermatt.
You can see how different everything looks in the winter here:

  1. Oh, Sandra! What a delightful peak into your son's wedding in the mountains. It looks absolutely perfect from the weather to the beautiful crocheted hearts on the tables to the beautiful photo of you to the happy couple departing in the carriage. The photos of the mountains are beyond spectacular and I so hope to see them in person some day (mountains are my "happy place"). I wish the happy couple many happy, healthy years ahead. Thank you for sharing his special day with us!

    1. Thanks, Sarn! It's a gorgeous place to stay and is full of lovely memories now too! Glad you liked the hearts wedding table decoration! It was rather fun to dress up for the occasion. I'm so used to casual clothes for everyday wear! The shoes were a great find and went so well with the bag and outfit and they had comfortable wedge heels too!

  4. I echo Carol’s comment—every detail of your son’s wedding looks perfect! You look beautiful, and I agree about the shoes! Gone are my days of wearing stylish high heels. It’s not easy, but so nice, to find dressy shoes that are comfortable as well. The highest mountain I’ve been to is Mount Mitchell in North Carolina. At 6,684 feet (2,037 m), it’s the highest peak east of the Mississippi. To witness the towering height of The Matterhorn must be truly breathtaking.

Do the children guiding the goats through town do that for the tourists, or is that part of the daily work of actual shepherding?

    1. Thank you, Susan, for coming in and for leaving your kind comment! Yes, the Matterhorn is very impressive! These two shots were taken on the balcony of my hotel room!
I'm not sure about the goats going through the town twice a day. I guess they're taking them up to pasture, but the the children dressed impeccably in red embroidered tunics makes me think that this is also a tourist attraction! Probably both!

  11. This is certainly a wedding to remember. The red hearts you crocheted are so beautiful and just the right accessory for a wedding. It must have felt lovely to participate in this way. I do love to see that lovely set table, it is so festive.

But oh, what a setting! I visited some parts of Switzerland, but have never been to Zermatt. Your beautiful photos tempt me to go there when I am in Europe the next time. I love the mountains anyway, especially the Alps, so I don't really need an excuse to go there. How far away are you from Zermatt? I can imagine that a train journey there must be beautiful.

Thank you for sharing those wonderful days with us.

    1. so nice to see you visit, Carola! Yes, the wedding was lovely and in a perfect setting. Thank you!
Zermatt is a beautiful place to visit. Once I get down to the station from where I live (I allow 30-40 mins by public transport to have a safe margin), the train from Lausanne to Zermatt is about three hours (with one change).

  12. It does look like a fairy-tale wedding! The mountains and village are beautiful. My legs would have ached if I hiked downhill for 1 1/2 hours too. :) Your hearts look wonderful on the 'napkins'. I always enjoy hearing, and seeing, about your lovely country. Thanks for taking us there today.
