Balancing Shapes

Learning to balance shapes and arranging space within the frame.
Seeing the lines, the tones and shapes
and choosing what to include and what to exclude.
In this image I love the bright colours and the textures and the way they compliment each other.

In this image I felt that the round ventilation grid gives a welcome focal point and the shape works with the straight lines in most of the other elements. The curtains with their design and side frill also soften the lines.

I love this one because of the different shapes, the muted colours and the depth of field.
The sun shining on the shelves also adds warmth and shadows.

I am attracted to reflections and like the vertical lines and their reflection in the window and the coloured spaces: white, pink and green balanced by what was excluded from the frame.

I was attracted to this image because of the sheer impact of the colours in the afternoon sun, how the peeling brown paintwork reveals a natural wood colour which echoes the colour chosen for the shutters.
I also love the shadows of branches from a tree which break up the vertical lines.

  1. Zinnia,
This has been an interesting project, looking at balance in our photos. The last photo here is the one that really draws my eye, with its contrasting colors, the shadow of the branches, and the texture of the paint peeling. Thank you for your kind comments on my blog, too!

  3. Sandra, you really did an excellent job with this fun project! I'm still looking for these shapes and lines. I love all the pictures, and how you have captured warm colors, complimentary colors, textures, and nearly all of the elements we learned in "Finding Your Eye". This post turned out exciting, don't you think? You've really inspired me! (Love both of the curtain designs)

  4. Oh my! Sandra, these are fabulous. You're really getting at balancing shapes in all of them. Frankly I'm having a difficult time choosing a fave. I love the contrasts in the top photo, the yellow and the black, and also the richness of tones in the photo with the weathered brown paint and the golden window. The coolness of the blue and grey reflections with the section of cool pink wall is also lovely. But you know me, I'm always drawn to the warmer colours. Great examples here. Well done!

  6. Hi Sandra,

These are really beautiful! The photos are nice and crisp, the textures are really interesing and the colors are contrasting and pleasing but nice and soft, not harsh. It is interesting to see how lines can either draw your eye into a photo or out of a photo. These are really nice examples.

  14. Argh. I don't know what happened, because I left a comment yesterday and now it has disappeared. You did a great job getting out and exploring this concept Sandra - I think it really clicked for you! My favorite is the last one. The contrast of the shadow lines on the diagonal with the warm colors and texture is very nice. I'm glad you found some shapes to balance, and linked in to Exploring with a Camera!
